Olympus Stylus 1030 SW Review

Review Summary
Review (Summary): "The Olympus Stylus 1030SW is a 10.1 megapixel point-and-shoot digital camera with a rough-and-ready body that is waterproof, crushproof, shockproof, and freeze-proof. A 3.6x optical zoom lens provides a wider-than-average 35mm-equivalent focal length of 28mm-102mm and is complemented by a 5x digital zoom. At f/3.5-f/5.1, the lens isn't the fastest glass in town, but the camera specializes in outdoor shooting, so the speed of the lens should suffice under most outdoor conditions. ...

... Olympus gets points for again producing a very rugged digital camera with a 28mm wide-angle lens, but they should have been able to improve the image quality over the last two years; unfortunately, despite the increased resolution, printed output is actually worse in the 10-megapixel 1030SW than it was in the 7.1-megapixel 720SW. ..."

Review (Summary): "At first glance, the Olympus Stylus 1030SW ($399) looks like just another ultra-compact camera, albeit a very well constructed one. As it turns out, the 1030SW is anything but ordinary - it's "everything-proof". That means waterproof (to 10 m), shockproof (2 m), freezeproof (-10C/14F), and crushproof (220 lb/ft). To borrow a phrase, the Stylus 1030SW can literally take a licking, and keep on ticking. ...

... Undoubtedly, the Stylus 1030SW's weak spot is its photo quality. On the positive side, the camera took well-exposed photos, with pleasing, saturated colors, and it also keeps purple fringing at bay. The bad news is that these photos have heavy noise reduction, and substantial blurring around the edges of the frame ..."

Review (Summary): "Announced on the 22nd of January 2008, the Olympus Mju Stylus 1030SW is Olympus' latest ultra compact "tough" digital camera - it's designed to withstand the elements, and is waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof, crushproof, dustproof, scratchproof, and therefore also childproof! The camera features a 10 megapixel sensor, a wide angle 3.6x optical zoom lens, a 2.7" screen that works in the sun, and a VGA video mode. ...

... The camera produces very good images that are colorful, pleasing, richly saturated with good exposure, and noise is generally low. You also have the option to use the Shadow Adjustment feature to bring out extra detail in the shadows. This camera should survive wherever you take it, and has a screen that works in any situation, including bright sunlight. ..."

Review (Summary): "Available in black or silver, the Mju 1030 SW is the first in the 'Tough' series with a 10-megapixel image sensor. Waterproof to 10 meters, it is also capable of withstanding a drop of two meters and can tolerate temperatures down to -10 degrees Celsius and pressures of up to 100 kilograms, making it the 'toughest' in the range. ...

Pictures taken with the test camera appeared very similar to test shots from other Olympus digicams we've reviewed recently. Saturation was generally well controlled, although reds were a little emphatic. Exposure metering was generally reliable in each of the modes supported. Autofocusing was reasonably fast and accurate in bright conditions but slowed down noticeably in dim lighting. ..."

Digital Camera Info 6.46 02-04-08 Read Full Review
Review (Summary): "The Olympus Stylus 1030 SW is one tough little camera. The company claims it will shoot 33 feet underwater, withstand temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, survive a 6.6-foot drop and 220 pounds of pressure. We didn’t make it down quite that deep (yet), but the other claims certainly, um, hold water. ...

... This is a camera you're going to buy for its distinctive element-defying capabilities, and the more you make use of them, the better the $400 price looks. For its intended audience, then, we give the 1030 SW high marks for value. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Olympus Mju 1030 SW is the latest addition to Olympus' ever-growing range of shockproof and waterproof digital cameras. Waterproof to a depth of 10m and shockproof against falls to 2m, the metal-bodied mju 1030 SW should survive pretty much anything that you subject it to...

... At a time when a lot of rivals shout about features that amount to little more than gimmicks, however, it's good to find Olympus providing the consumer with a unique selling point that is more than just a conversation piece and is genuinely useful. Even though it's boxy and business like in design, the mju 1030 SW is not unattractive. Also in its favor, this is a camera that is fast in operation and as easy to use as it is sturdy – as it should be if you're hurtling down the slopes with it or diving into the pool at the villa. ..."
